Chad Johnson is day-to-day with a sprained shoulder. Johnson himself appears unworried, but Marvin Lewis wouldn’t commit him for the opener. With fellow WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh and RB Rudi Johnson already on the sidelines tending to their hamstrings, the Bengals first-team offense has been largely dead in the water for the first two preseason games.
Its struggles were only exacerbated last night by an offensive line shuffle. With backup center Dan Santucci lost to injury, the Bengals tried out their “Jurassic Line,” which involves moving RG Bobbie Williams to center, RT Stacy Anderson to RG, and inserting Willie Anderson at RT. What we found out is that the “Jurassic Line” needs to be relegated to the Jurassic period. Chris adds that the line may still not have rounded back into football shape. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if work has been lighter than usual in camp this year, given all the roster-limit-driven attention to avoiding injury.
On the plus side, second-round pick Jerome Simpson caught five balls for 114 yards and RB Chris Perry continues to make a beast of himself. LBs Corey Mays and Darryl Blackstock also made some plays. Doc adds the usual caveat: it’s only preseason, but like I said yesterday, I’m sure the Bengals would prefer to have woken up winners this a.m.
