Two weekends ago during the game between the Bengals and the Jacksonville Jaguars, there was a fight on the field between Bengals guard Andrew Whitworth and Jaguars defensive tackle John Henderson. Here’s the video, courtesy of Cincyjungle.com:
In that clip, you can see Henderson attacking a helmetless Whitworth and attempting to gouge his eyes. As he does so, other Bengals fly in and try to pull Henderson off of Andrew. It was bad enough when, as a reward for defending himself, the league fined Whitworth $10,000, the same punishment it gave to his attacker, Henderson.
Today comes the jaw-dropping revelation that, due to their efforts to break the two combatants up, the entire offense on the field that play, except for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, was hit with fines!
Bengals left tackle Levi Jones, one of 10 Bengals fined, says he’ll appeal his $5,000 charge for what he says was “breaking up” the fight between teammate Andrew Whitworth and Jaguars defensive tackle John Henderson.
“I was trying to protect my teammate who wasn’t wearing a helmet,” Jones said Wednesday. “I took Henderson’s hands off Whit’s face. I understand there are rules and we do have to follow them, but you have to go by situations.”
Apparently everyone on offense who was on the field got fined except quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco, the man who used to keep a personal fine fund of about $100,000, confirmed his $2,500 hit for simply being in the area of the fight.
That is absolutely ridiculous. Absolutely. Ridiculous. C. Trent adds that nine Jags were also fined for “being in the area of the fight.” That, too, qualifies as ridiculous.
