Monday Morning Hangover: The More Things Change…
There isn’t much to say about Cincinnati’s ugly 34-3 loss to the Ravens that hasn’t been said a million times before. The losing is, indeed, old. Head coach Marvin Lewis said that he believes that the team has hit bottom, but long-time fans have been at the “bottom” many times, and know the Bengals always find new lows.
In fact, they’re already there. Whether it’s suing ticketholders to force them to buy tickets or pressing charges against a penny-ante pilferer while stocking the roster with “redemption projects,” the organization continues to generate all the wrong kinds of headlines.
Not that there isn’t the occasional bit of positive news, but it always seems to me a case of grasping (or, in Keith Rivers’ case, not grasping) for straws. Anything good this team does quickly gets submerged in a sea of stink. Whether it’s more from Chad or more injuries or more reminders of front office incompetence, the bad on this team has no difficulty snuffing out any occasional flickers of hope.
It’s the kind of thing that leads the dwindling number of Bengals fans to fear the fast-approaching offseason even more than the final four games. We know what those will bring. But the offseason could bring the most frightening thing of all: more of the same.
It’s the kind of game that makes you wonder how massive the changes are going to be in 2009. Lewis has two years left on his deal, but he keeps talking about next year and said defiantly after this one that fans won’t get another season like this one. He wouldn’t discuss what he and Bengals president Mike Brown are talking about these days, but Brown is known for not making a head coaching change with so much time left on a contract and one report said this year that Lewis has been told it’s his job as long as he wants it.
And the beat goes on.
