A tip of the hat to Adam at arrowheadaddict for pointing out this piece on team turnarounds by Jimmy Johnson. Bengals fans will find his thoughts all too familiar, and this particular observation about Oakland all too applicable to Cincinnati as well:
You can look around the league and say this can also be done with other franchises. But it can’t be done with the Raiders. Why? Because you are not going to have this complete change of structure with Al Davis still owning the team.
Change “Raiders” to Bengals,” “Al Davis” to “the Brown Family” and “owning” to “running” and you’ve got what I wrote last week. Until the mom ‘n’ pop organizational structure of the team is retired in favor of something resembling a modern, professional football operation, the Bengals will remain the same floundering franchise they’ve been since the early Nineties.
Added: We should be so lucky.

Dude, you just don’t know how hard it is to run an NFL franchise. It’s really hard, that’s why Katie and Mike choose to do it with about one third the resources other organizations employ. Seems counterproductive, but it’s a clever combination of reverse psychology, Reaganomics, and white man voodoo.
