Bengals Win Means No Top 3 Draft Pick

A late drive for a game-winning field goal try failed in St. Louis as the Rams fell 17-16 to the San Francisco 49ers. In Kansas City, the Chiefs recovered a Miami fumble trailing by a touchdown with under two minutes to play. But their hopes died on a Tyler Thigpen interception on fourth down, and the Dolphins left Arrowhead with a 38-31 win. Those losses, combined with the Bengals 14-0 shutout of the Cleveland Browns, mean the Bengals can now pick no higher than fourth in the April 2009 draft. The Bengals could fall as far as sixth if both Oakland and Seattle lose in the late games. Cleveland remains in the seven hole no matter what happens, as they lose strength of schedule tiebreakers against both the Raiders and Seahawks.

Update: At the half, Oakland and Houston are knotted at 13, while Seattle leads the Jets 7-3 despite 3 Seahawks turnovers.

Update 2: As I suspected, Seattle had a shot against the plummeting Jets, and pulled out a 13-3 victory that deals a stunning blow to New York’s playoff hopes. Meanwhile, Oakland proved my assessment that they were done wrong, whomping the Texans 27-16. Those two victories keep the Bengals in the No. 4 spot. Depending on what happens next weekend, they will select between 4 and 7 next April.
