Houshmandzadeh May Skip Spring Camps if Tagged

Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh turned his “don’t tag me” campaign up a notch in the wake of current franchise player Stacy Andrews’ season-ending ACL injury. Houshmandzadeh told bengals.com that he may skip spring camps if hit with the franchise tag.

A franchise tag candidate himself, Houshmandzadeh bristles because, “It means you think he’s worth that much to be on your team. Then pay him what he’s worth (long term).” After watching what happened to Andrews, Houshmandzadeh says he’d have trouble coming to the spring camps if he had the tag.

The “threat” rings a bit hollow as T.J. has skipped all non-mandatory OTAs for the last two offseasons, but represents an escalation of the low-key campaign he’s conducted all season against being tagged. And to be fair, he has a point. If anyone on this team has done anything to warrant a new deal, it’s T.J. The Bengals and Housh’s agent have reportedly exchanged numbers, but the two sides remain far apart.

Geoff Hobson also reports that the Bengals are in the early stages of contract talks with S Chris Crocker, who has gotten rave reviews since arriving six weeks ago, and that there is mutual interest between the team and RB Cedric Benson.
