Rumor: Bengals Considering Mueller for GM

by Bengals

Over at PFT, Muckraker Mike is floating a rumor that the Bengals are considering Randy Mueller for the position of general manager.

At first glance, Mueller looks like a good fit for Cincinnati. As general manager of the Dolphins, Mueller did not have control over player personnel, something he’d be unlikely to get in Cincinnati, either. And as GM of the Saints, he assembled one double-digit win team in 2000, after which New Orleans spent years mucking around the .500 mark. From 1990 through 1999 he was, first, Director of Player Personnel and, later, Director of Football Operations for the Seattle Seahawks — a 10-year span in which the Hawks had two (2) winning seasons.

So, to sum up, Mueller appears to be willing to accept a powerless figurehead role but, if granted actual authority, also has a proven capability to produce the kind of consistent mediocrity Bengals fans have come to expect. It’s a win-win.
