Draft Snapshot: Michael Oher

Ole Miss offensive tackle Michael Oher is currently the mockosphere’s leading choice for the Bengals at six this April. Who is this young man who may receive a $50 million-plus payday from Bengals owner Mike Brown before ever taking an NFL snap? Here’s a look.

Oher’s inspirational story was chronicled in detail by author Michael Lewis in The Blind Side. Draft Countdown spoke briefly with Oher last August. There are no shortage of OT rankings for the upcoming draft around the ‘tubes, so here’s just one example.

With Cincinnati’s offensive line a shambles and the character of the offense a question mark thanks to diva wideouts, grumpy left tackles and guys who have trouble staying out of trouble, Oher would be a huge step in the right direction for Cincinnati. Despite the fact that 2009 is a deep year for offensive linemen, giving the Bengals the option of addressing linebacker or defensive end at six and deferring OT to round two, I would think that Oher would be nearly impossible to pass up should he still be on the board when the Bengals pick.

Of course you know this means Michael Crabtree or Beanie Wells is our guy.

Welcome back, pragmatic! Saw you had a fresh post a couple weeks back. Glad you didn’t end up as “Suicidal Bengals Fan,” or, even worse, “Pittsburgh Steelers Fan.” And yeah, gawd knows, we’re probably screwed. Mikey will go after an offensive skill position and send thousands of bricks through thousands of TV screens come draft day.

Thanks, David. :) I SWEAR, if this young man is on the board and Mike Brown doesn’t take him, I may just hang up my stripes. Between our needs on the OL and this young man’s character, this is the biggest no-brainer I’ve seen since I’ve been a Bengals fan.

Damn. Memphis is a hard place. I’m rooting for this kid to be our pick. What a story.
