Props to Rotoworld for catching an update (or maybe it was there from the start and I just blew past it on first reading) to this piece on bengals.com. Writes Geoff “hey Rocky, watch me bury the lead!” Hobson:
Lewis said the Bengals could conceivably sign a player in free agency and then draft the same position because there are positions they need two players. He’s probably talking about running back and the offensive line, where they are talking to the agents for Cedric Benson and Stacy Andrews.
This is the first word Bengals fans have had of actual talks since a mention of a phone exchange between the team and the agent for safety Chris Crocker at the tail end of the season. Opines Rotoworld, “It’s unlikely that an offer has been submitted, but staying in Cincy is Benson’s first choice and the Bengals were pleased with what he gave them in 2008.” They add that a multi-year offer seems unlikely as the “volatile” back has yet to prove himself.
I’m not sure. From all indications, the Bengals are sold on Benson and want to nail down his services for more than just the 2009 season. And Cedric will have interest in free agency after his performance with the Bengals, so something more than a one-year deal is almost certainly going to be necessary. Unless, of course, the Bengals plan to hit him with the $6 million-plus franchise tag.
That Cincinnati is talking with Andrews isn’t surprising, at least to me. The 2008 franchise player won’t draw much, if any, interest in March thanks to his torn ACL, and the Bengals have been open about the possibility of retaining him. I don’t object, but please, let’s consider anything we get out of The Dancing Bear a bonus, not something to be counted on.
