Injuries Hit Playoff Bengals
Former Bengals Willie Anderson and Landon Johnson both went down with injuries in yesterday’s playoff games. Ravens RT Anderson suffered a neck stinger, but returned to the field. Baltimore toppled top AFC seed Tennessee 13-10, sending Big Willie to his first-ever AFC Championship game. Panthers LB Johnson was carted off with a hip injury, and did not return. It’s a lousy end to the season for Johnson, whose Panthers were shelled by the visiting Cardinals 33-13. Final verdict: Johnson left Cincinnati in March in search of a starting spot, which the Bengals, eyeing Keith Rivers in the draft, would not [...]
Jimmy Crum 1928-2009
Respected Ohio sportscaster Jimmy Crum, the radio voice of the Bengals from their inception in 1968 to 1980, died on Monday. He was 80. Crum and play-by-play man Phil Samp, who passed away in 2005, were a team in Cincinnati for 23 seasons.
For those Bengals fans into offseason tea leaf reading (and aren’t we all?) the fact that the Bengals Pro Shop is basically giving away Chad Johnson and Ocho Cinco jerseys offers support for the theory that the Bengals will move Johnson this offseason. Also possibly notable (or possibly not) is that Chad’s own Web site, chadjohnson85.com, now redirects to a zazzle.com page offering cheesy 85- and tiger-themed junk, though at what point between last summer and now that happened, I don’t know. Through the magic of teh google, you can still get to the original site, but there isn’t much [...]
Bengals Confirm No Surgery for Palmer
C. Trent passes along word from the Bengals that QB Carson Palmer will not require surgery to repair an injured elbow. An MRI conducted during the last week of the season found the injury had healed on its own, said team spokesman Jack Brennan. He added that the team expects Palmer to fully participate in the 2009 offseason program.
Bengals Big Board 1/6
In case you haven’t noticed, NFL mock draft season is getting underway. Fansided’s own draft experts are tracking mock drafts around the net here, and between that database and an assist from Walter’s, here’s a first look at the consensus selections for Cincinnati at six. Note that I’m only including mocks updated since the end of the season with the Bengals in the correct draft slot. That’s still more than 40 mocks, and that number will only grow as we get closer to the April draft. The final column, “change,” indicates the increase or decrease in selections versus the last [...]
Bengals on the Bubble
Aside from the usual crop of free agents, there are a number of current Bengals who may not be wearing orange-and-black come next fall. Here’s a rundown of players on the bubble. Chris Perry. A first-round pick in 2004, Perry has appeared in just 35 games in five seasons. At the beginning of the 2008 season, the Bengals cut Rudi Johnson and handed Perry the starting job. He responded by gaining just 253 rushing yards in six starts, and was benched for Bears castoff Cedric Benson. By season’s end, he would be outrushed by not just Benson, but No. 2 [...]
Bengals, Jaguars to Coach Senior Bowl
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and his staff will coach the North team in the Under Armor Senior Bowl on January 24. Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio and his staff will helm the South team. This marks the third time Lewis has coached in the Senior Bowl. Last time around, in 2004, his North team lost 28-10. The job gives Lewis and the rest of the Bengals’ coaches a chance to get up close and personal with some prospective draft picks. Bengals punter Kyle Larson was signed after playing for the ’04 North squad. And two players from [...]

The Dearly Departed, Week 18
Former Bengals Pro Bowl right tackle Willie Anderson got the first playoff victory of his 13-year NFL career Saturday when the Baltimore Ravens rolled over the Miami Dolphins 27-9. Now, Big Willie and the Ravens travel to Tennessee to challenge the AFC’s top seed, the Titans. Baltimore and Tennessee met in week 5 of the regular season. The Ravens led 10-3 going into the fourth quarter of that game, but ended up losing by a field goal. Ex-Bengals safety Madieu Williams wasn’t as lucky, as his Vikings fell to the Eagles 28-14. Madieu had four tackles in the game, giving [...]
