Okay, full disclosure: I was big fan of the John Thornton signing back in Marvin Lewis’ first year. And I always thought he got more crap from the fans than he deserved (you think maybe they might have given him some help on the line?). But anyhow, for those Cincinnati fans who can’t seen anything but offensive tackle in the first in April, John lays down the law:
My reasons for not drafting a OT with the sixth pick is because that position can be filled in free agency with a guy that will be much cheaper than a 50 million dollar contract. Sedrick Ellis was the 7th pick last year and got a 50 million dollar deal. And don’t think that this won’t be a long holdout either. So I hope all of you OT lovers are taking that in to account. You want to take a guy and pay him 50 mill and prob hold out most of Training Camp? And then come in and protect Carson? Ok. Good luck with that. Believe me, his agent is gonna want more than what Ellis got and I don’t think he will get it very easily.
Of course, I’m a B.J. Raji pimp, so I can’t help John on the back side of his argument. But yeah, the point about wanting a full offseason and camp from the o-line is well-taken. We’ll see how free agency goes.
