As the football universe gathers in Indianapolis for its annual (and overblown) cattle call, the initial buzz surrounding the Cincinnati Bengals concerns the wide receiver position. Not in relation to the draft prospects currently being poked and prodded at Lucas Oil Stadium, but rather in reference to current and former Cincy ball-catchers.
Former Bengals wideout Kelly Washington has expressed interest in returning to Cincinnati. “He said he liked it there, liked the people, and enjoyed playing with Carson,” said his agent, Chad Speck. Meanwhile, the Bengals front office isn’t giving any signals that it’s willing to trade Chad Johnson. And finally, Chris Henry is out in California working out with Carson Palmer and soon-to-be free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Bengals fans have heard the song-and-dance about Henry turning over a new leaf before, so color me skeptical, but he did keep his nose clean last season after being re-signed against the wishes of head coach Marvin Lewis, and his presence in California can only be read as a good sign. Keep it up, Chris.
That there isn’t any trade talk around Chad right now doesn’t surprise me. If any deal does go down, it’s most likely to happen on draft day. I’m not holding out any hope for a deal that brings the kind of compensation Washington offered last season. For the record, I don’t believe Ocho Cinco will be traded.
Kelly Washington? Not interested. The Bengals would be better served to get Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell more involved, versus taking a step back to a guy who wasn’t all that anyhow.
