Only a few days after giving strong-side ‘backer Rashad Jeanty the second-round restricted free agent tender, the Cincinnati Bengals have attached the same offer to weak side LB Brandon Johnson. Johnson, a former Arizona Cardinal, started nine games last season after first-round pick Keith Rivers went down for the year with a broken jaw.
Between Johnson, Jeanty and franchise player Shayne Graham, the Bengals now have $5.48 million in tenders counting against the 2009 salary cap. They are not expected to tender MLB Corey Mays and may allow their other restricted free agents to test the market untendered as well. All of them were undrafted and would require at least the same offer as Jeanty and Johnson got in order to bring any compensation to the club if they sign elsewhere.
