We interrupt our ongoing coverage of all things Houshmandzadeh to bring you our regularly scheduled update of the Cincinnati Bengals Mock Draft Big Board. When last we checked in with the mockosphere, offensive tackle Andre Smith’s bizarre behavior at the NFL Combine had pushed OTs Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith to the top of the tackle heap.
Initially, it looked as if Monroe had gotten the No. 1 OT tag, but over the past week sentiment has shifted strongly in favor of Jason Smith. He is, at least for the moment, now favored to be the first tackle off the board. In light of that, conventional wisdom finally appears to be coalescing around a single candidate for the Bengals at six, Eugene Monroe. Monroe has leaped ahead of the pack this update, garnering 31 votes out of 115 mocks tracked. Jason Smith is now a distant second with 18.
But Monroe’s lead may not hold up. Not only is the impact of the Combine still working its way through the mockosphere, but mockers were hit with a roundhouse right yesterday when KC pulled off a blockbuster trade for QB Matt Cassel. Many mocks had QB Mark Sanchez ticketed to the Chiefs at three, and that’s obviously not going to happen now. Should Kansas City decide to give Cassel the top receiving weapon in Michael Crabtree, Seattle would have to strongly consider a tackle at four (and perhaps that explains John Thornton’s reports of a renewed surge of interest in T.J. by a “West Coast” team?).
Also worth noing is a report out today from the Chicago Tribune’s Dan Pompei that Monroe is being flagged by some teams for knee problems. Monroe missed two games his junior year due to knee problems, and dislocated a kneecap his sophomore season.
Offensive tackle remains the favorite position, with 78 of 115 mocks choosing an OT for Cincinnati.
As always, the Big Board was assembled by combing through Fansided’s Mock Draft Database. It uses only mocks that have been updated in the past 30 days. As we get closer to the draft, I will trim that time frame down further so as to more closely reflect the most up-to-date standings.
