Asked why he would accept a backup role in Houston over a starting job in Cincinnati, running back Cedric Benson said, “The business side here might be better than the business side in Cincinnati.”
Whether that turns out to be true remains to be seen. The market for backs has been very weak in this free agent period, with even top available prospect Derrick Ward lacking what he considers suitable offers.
If Benson can’t get a lucrative long-term deal, a one-year run as a backup — especially in part of the country where he’s already popular — could be the next-best thing. He will still be young enough to draw interest in a multi-year deal in 2010, and may get more looks with another trouble-free year under his belt.
