A good interview with an NFL scout (h/t Draft Daddy) offers some insights into the top of the draft. The anonymous scout has this to say about OT Andre Smith (note this was prior to Smith’s so-so pro day):
The kid is a monster on the field, just a beast. He’s probably the best run blocker I’ve ever seen coming out of college. But he has got to prove he learns from his mistakes. We worry about his weight too. He needs to show he is in top condition and is willing to work hard to stay there.
Another name in the mix for the Bengals with their first pick is DT B.J. Raji, who apparently did nothing to hurt his stock at the Eagles’ pro day yesterday. In his most recent mock, The Hair gave Raji to the Browns with the 5th overall pick, a choice John Thornton says makes no sense. I didn’t think so, either, but I also couldn’t help but notice that the guy pictured behind Raji in that News Tribune story is Cleveland defensive line coach Bryan Cox.
Speaking of Thornton, he’s posting results from Ohio State’s pro day. First update: Chris Wells smoked the 40 in 4.40 and 4.42.
OT Jason Smith will make a pre-draft visit to Cincinnati in the next two weeks.
The Chickster traces the sad history of Cincinnati’s first-round selections: 51 picks, but just seven Pro Bowlers.
