Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reports that Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards will be shipped to New York at some point in the next 10 days.
The Browns reportedly asked for a second- and fifth-round pick and receiver Steve Smith, but the Giants declined. New York countered by offering the two draft picks and receiver Domenik Hixon for Edwards.
Neither the Browns or Giants could be reached for this story, but both sources said the gap will be bridged before the draft.
If true, the trade would eliminate New York as a possible destination for Chad Ochocinco, though I expect it will reignite Chad-to-the-Eagles speculation, with the theory being that the Eagles may want to keep up with the division rivals.
On the plus side, with Edwards gone and Donte Stallworth facing DUI manslaughter charges, the Browns will be taking a hard look at receiver with the fifth overall pick. That helps the kind of scenario I sketched out in my above entry, one that unexpectedly pushes a blue-chip defender like Aaron Curry down to the bengals.
