The Cincinnati Bengals have parted ways with 2004 first-round pick Chris Perry.
Perry, the first pick in ‘04, played in just 35 games and rushed for 606 yards after missing all but two games of his rookie year and the entire 2007 season. He started the first six games of last season but was benched in favor of Cedric Benson when fumbles and a 2.6-yard per rush doomed him.
Perry finished with 3.4 yards per carry on 177 runs with two touchdowns as well as 83 catches for 474 yards (5.7) and two touchdowns.
The Bengals cut four others along with Perry: RB Gary Russell, who was claimed off waivers from the Steelers 10 days ago; S Mike Doss, DE/LB Eric Henderson and TE Nate Lawrie.
The cuts come on the heels of the Bengals selecting DE Michael Johnson, TE Chase Coffman, RB Bernard Scott, and RB Fui Vakapuna in last weekend’s draft.
Despite drafting OT Andre Smith, LT Levi Jones remains on the roster, though his agent claims the Bengals initially told him that Levi would be traded or cut prior to the draft. There has been some post-draft rumbling about possible interest in Jones in Buffalo and Chicago.

I want the reason that they release Gary Russell!
Was it a smokescreen for something?? I sure don’t understand this one AT ALL. I was looking forward to letting that Chip on his shoulder getting big when he played Pittsburg, but Alas…….they let him go.
But at RB with the first 6th round the Bengals managed to ignore the character issues yet again.
I knew there was a pretty good back at Abelein Christian, but is this the kid?? I heard Tim and Pat going on about one kid and even heard the interview, but I don’t think this was the same guy.
Man, I hope Russell doesn’t land in Cleveland!
I understand the Chris Perry move….but not releasing Russell. AT ALL.
