Rain forced the Bengals into a simple walk-through this evening, which should save most everyone from getting injured. In on-field news, Big C has been impressed by rookie Fui Vakapuna. And James Walker offers up some observations from his Bengals camp visit, noting Cedric Benson looked pretty good.
Now, the defensive tackles…I liked what I saw out of Pat Sims last year, but the signing of Tank Johnson will keep him off the field at times. Tank and Domata Peko should start, with Sims rotating in to keep everyone fresh. Jason Shirley enters his second season and needs to play better than he parallel parks (or whatever it was that he was doing). He certainly has the size for the position. Pernell Phillips, a rookie from Central State, will also get some snaps in training camp. Hopefully, someone will emerge as a pass rusher at this position because the Bengals never seem to get an inside push in passing situations. James Walker wrote that the pass rush has been emphasized at Bengals camp so let’s hope that some of that instruction will pay off.
And in unprecedented news, the Bengals have a first-round pick who is holding out. Oh wait, nevermind, that happens every year. And it drives me crazy. I’m not sure if anyone keeps stats on NFL holdouts, but I’d love to see them. The Bengals seem to negotiate every last cent of rookie contracts, proving their penny-pinching ways, and don’t seem to mind if a rookie misses days on end. Meanwhile, holdouts can ruin entire seasons. Or careers (See: Akili Smith). So let’s hope this Andre Smith thing ends soon. Just don’t hold your breath.
Brennen Warner

Tank and Peko starters and Sims rotating in. Tank will be a penetrator, but I don't think he's a sacker. Should open the door some for Peko to tie up two and give Geathers and Odom a shot at doing what they were meant to do.
