The Tipping Point

This game has been on the Bengals schedule before. It’s a game they should win, one in which they seem to have an advantage in almost every area. And the Bengals have lost it before.

So let’s hope the Bengals can avoid a similar fate in their first game this season. There aren’t many must-win games in Week 1, but I truly believe this is one of them. If the Bengals can’t win – and perhaps if they can’t do it convincingly – this could be a troubling season.

Denver has a new coach who appears to be ill-equipped to handle NFL egos. The Broncos have a new quarterback, who is mediocre at best, and recently dislocated his finger. The team’s best wide receiver is a train-wreck who was recently punting footballs and disruptive during practice and has only been on the field this past week. There’s a rookie running back and a defense that has little talent outside of Champ Bailey. All signs point to a Cincinnati win.

So if the Bengals bungle this, if they somehow snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it’s going to be a long year. They play the Packers, Steelers, and Ravens in three of the next four games and frankly all of them could be losses. So the team needs to start fast, win in Week One and hopefully generate some momentum – and confidence perhaps – that will carry them into a difficult month.

Brace yourself Bengals fans. Week One is a tipping point. Let’s hope things fall in the right direction.

  1. Roy Williams is a good hitter, but couldn’t cover my grandmother. He was beat many times in the preseason. You’d think with OC, CH and LC to cover in practice he’d get better, but nope.

Anyone ever heard of bringing a safety out on passing downs (Williams) to bring another one in to cover (Crocker or Ndukwe)? This will be interesting to see.
