Have a Who-Dey New Year!

AUTHOR: david | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Some random facts to impress your friends with at tonight’s New Year’s Eve parties. Everyone have fun, remember to call a cab or just sleep it off, and I’ll see you all in 2010.

The Bengals have reached double-digit wins for just the 8th time in franchise history.
Through 15 games, the Bengals have allowed 254 points. If they hold the Jets to fewer than 30 points, they will break the franchise record for a full 16-game season, 284, set in 1978.
While 2009 will be the 9th time that Cincinnati has qualified for postseason play, it’s the first time the team has [...]

A Trip Down (Recent) Memory Lane

AUTHOR: david | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

With the Cincinnati Bengals having clinched the AFC North crown for the second time in five years, I think it’s time to head off to Costco to buy a case of Sugar Frosted Crow Crispies and a dozen gallons of milk for all the “experts” who assured us that this outcome was absolutely impossible.
Why was that?
“[Cedric] Benson played well at the end of ‘08, but trusting him as the primary ball carrier is worrisome. The other options on the roster are either unproven or less than dynamic. Few teams are in such bad shape at running back. Consensus finish: 3rd.

NFL Pro Bowl Snubs Bengals–Thank You

AUTHOR: gregstephens | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The 2010 Pro Bowl players have been announced–and the Cincinnati Bengals are the only team in the AFC, besides the Chiefs, that are not represented.
Thank you.
The Pro Bowl is a bad idea.  Putting players of the most dangerous sport in the world on the field for no reason and risk permanent injury is a bad idea.  There is no trophy.  Not that much prize money.  Not even a lot of prestige.
And this year is even worse.  This year the Pro Bowl is being played before the Super Bowl.
I don’t know if the Bengals are going to the Super Bowl.  I [...]

To Play or Not to Play

AUTHOR: gregstephens | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Congratulations to the 2009 Cincinnati Bengals for winning the AFC North divisional title.  This marks the second time this decade the Bengals have accomplished this feat and extended their January playing schedule.
With one game left in the season, a nationally televised Sunday Night game in the Meadowlands, a big debate now rages:  who should play?
Most old-school, die-hard NFL fans are quick to quote Herm Edwards in pointing out that, “you play…to win…the game!”  Therefore, you play sixteen games, you fight to win as many of those as possible.
To that end, logic would dictate the first stringers take the field Sunday [...]

Princeton Tigers Tap Bengals Assistant for Top Job

AUTHOR: david | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

Princeton University has named long-time Cincinnati Bengals assistant offensive line coach Bob Surace the new head coach of the Princeton Tigers.
Princeton alum Surace has been with the Bengals for nine seasons. Prior to joining the Cincinnati staff, Surace was head coach at Western Connecticut State, where he compiled an 18-3 record over two seasons.
“We are sad to see Bob go, but we’re excited for him and his family that he has achieved a career goal, being named head coach at Princeton,” Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis said. “Bob has been a huge part of our staff and of the success [...]

Bengals 24, Chargers 27

Apologies for the dearth of posts this past weekend; the holidays always seem to soak up more time than I expect. Between shopping and family events, I did manage to catch bits and pieces of the game. It was more competitive than I, or most others, had expected – but in the end the same problems that have haunted Cincinnati all year emerged to trip them for another loss.
As has become common, the Bengals couldn’t play clean. They were flagged nine times for 55 yards Sunday, with three of those yellow hankies tossed on three consecutive plays during an embarrassing [...]

“The World’s Not Going to Stop”

AUTHOR: david | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Leave it to Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to put it all in some perspective. After losing his wife Vikki earlier this season, no one in the Bengals organization is more qualified to speak in the aftermath of Chris Henry’s untimely death.
“I don’t think anyone knows how to deal with it. Like I told somebody, the world’s not going to stop. That’s how it was with me,” he said. “That’s the one thing I learned from this whole deal. The world ain’t stopping. People still get up and go to work. Everyone’s got to deal with different issues and [...]

Bengals WR Henry Dead at 26

AUTHOR: david | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry died early Thursday morning as a result of injuries suffered in a pickup truck accident on Wednesday.
He was 26.
In 55 regular-season games with the Bengals, Henry had 119 receptions for 1,826 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also had one catch for 66 yards in the Bengals’ 2005 playoff game against Pittsburgh, but injured his knee in the process. Ironically, it was the same play on which QB Carson Palmer’s knee got shredded, and Henry’s injury went almost unnoticed.
As a Bengal, Henry was more famous — or infamous, if you prefer — for a string of [...]
