UPDATE: ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is reporting that WR Matt Jones will sign with the Bengals.
OP: Following up on a report from Muckraker Mike, Joe Reedy confirms that the Bengals have an offer on the table for former Jaguars receiver Matt Jones.
The Bengals and Titans have both offered former Jaguars receiver Matt Jones a contract. According to The Tennessean, the Titans have been interested in Jones since last September while Jones visited with the Bengals this week.
The deal is believed to be slightly above the league minimum of $630,000. Neither team also would not have to wait until the start of free agency on March 5 to sign him since he didn’t play last year.
Jones was released by Jacksonville last March after violating the terms of a plea deal. In the summer of 2008, he was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance. Those charges, which were for possession of cocaine, were later dropped after he completed a drug program. The league did suspend Jones for three games in 2008 for violating the substance abuse policy.
Reedy adds that the Bengals are also expected to kick Donte Stallworth’s tires.
Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt hears that Jones is leaning toward Cincinnati (h/t: WDR).
Sigh. On the one hand, any sign that the team is looking at options other than drafting a first-round wide receiver — who will be very unlikely to be able to contribute immediately — is welcome news. On the other hand…oh, what the hell, sign ‘em all, Jones, Stallworth, T.O. If we’re gonna redeem, let’s freakin’ REDEEM!
