Coach Lewis is making a few interesting Draft comments recently. It really looks like he is trying to toss as much smoke screen he can before the draft. Tossing around such great quotes as:
“We’ve evaluated quarterbacks but I don’t think we’re forced into any situation any way or another. I think we want to be very, very careful to make sure we… get the value for the picks where we’re making them.”
Translation: “We’re not trading up for a Quarterback.” And I don’t blame him, no matter what happens someone will fall to them. Be it a Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert happens to be there or be it Dalton, Ponder or Mallett at 35. I get what Marvin’s saying though, he doesn’t want to seem like they NEED a Quarterback, even though any informed NFL fan can tell they do.
That’s not all of the fun quotes Marvin’s been tossing out. He’s also made mention that he could be interested in moving up or down in the draft.
“We are not locked into anything, but I don’t think you’ve seen many people clamoring to move to the top of drafts very often.”
Translation: “I really, really would like to trade down. But I doubt we’ll get a chance to.” Which can be very true in this situation. Considering the effects of the lockout and no CBA, you can’t trade any players. So the typical trades that happen before the draft or the day of the draft involving players can’t happen, making teams a little less willing to want to move around. To give an example of the cost of moving up in the draft; for the 49ers to move up to the Bengals 4th overall pick from 7th it would take at least a 3rd round pick. And that’s moving up 3 picks, so imagine the deals teams farther back would have to make to get the Bengals to move back.
