ESPN this week had a question and answer session with Matt Williamson of Scout Inc. A Bengals fan asked him a question about Dalton’s arm saying: “Do you think Dalton’s arm strength will be able to utilize Green’s explosiveness?”.
Williamson responded saying
Not a believer at all in Dalton’s arm strength. Huge problem to me-esp in that area of the country with weather. But I do think he is able to get the ball downfield if he has room in the pocket to load up. Just can’t make the tight throws or generate enough RPMs when conditions are not ideal…and that is a problem.
Obviously not everyone was a fan of Dalton. That’s why he was a second round pick and not the 1st overall. But the Bengals obviously felt strongly enough to draft him with the 35th overall pick (after trying multiple times to trade back up into the 1st). As Bengals Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has pointed out before
He doesn’t take a lot of effort to throw the deeper routes. It’s not like he has to hitch and jump in the air to throw because his arm is weak.
Some of these opinions of Dalton’s arm make it sound like exactly that. But the film speaks for itself. If the team felt the Williamson does on Dalton, they never would have drafted him.
