It’s been made mentioned many times on this blog and all over the internet that the Bengals have rebooted their roster. To really see how much of a difference there is in the roster take the starters of last years Hall of Fame Game versus Dallas and compare them the starters this year heading into Detroit.
| 2010 | Pos. | 2011 |
|---|---|---|
| Carson Palmer | QB | Andy Dalton* |
| Cedric Benson | RB | Cedric Benson |
| Chad Ochocinco | WR1 | Jerome Simpson* |
| Terrell Owens | WR2 | A.J. Green* |
| Andrew Whitworth | LT | Andrew Whitworth |
| Nate Livings | LG | Nate Livings |
| Kyle Cook | C | Kyle Cook |
| Bobbie Williams | RG | Bobbie Williams |
| Dennis Roland | RT | Andre Smith* |
| Jermaine Gresham | TE | Jermaine Gresham |
| Reggie Kelly | TE/FB | Chris Pressley* |
A decent sized change when looking at Offense. 5 new starters on offense this year, with 4 of those 5 players from the 2010 season no longer being on the roster. The offensive line for the most part in tact (don’t know if that’s good or bad) but nearly every other position has had some sort of shakeup.

| Robert Geathers | LDE | Robert Geathers |
| Domata Peko | LDT | Domata Peko |
| Tank Johnson | RDT | Tank Johnson |
| Antwan Odom | RDE | Michael Johnson* |
| Rey Maualuga | SLB | Manny Lawson* |
| Dhani Jones | MLB | Rey Maualuga* |
| Keith Rivers | WLB | Thomas Howard* |
| Leon Hall | CB | Leon Hall |
| Chris Crocker | FS | Reggie Nelson* |
| Roy Williams | SS | Chris Crocker* |
| Johnathan Joseph | CB | Nate Clements* |
When looking at Defense it’s surprising to think how so many writers have said it looks solid when it is in-fact so different from last years. With Rey moving to the middle it’s bumped Dhani out and brought in another player. With Odom’s constant injuries the team decided to cut him loose replacing him with Michael Johnson. Adding depth to the LB’s the Bengals added Thomas Howard, who has the starting job while Rivers is on PUP. When Joseph left for the Texans the Bengals quickly signed veteran Nate Clements to take over his CB role. Reggie Nelson was a later pick up in a trade right before the regular season started, and Chris Crocker is now being given a chance to play a more natural feeling Strong Safety position.
With both sides adding up to only returning 10 out of 22 possible starters, it’s hard to feel this season will be a repeat of last years. Seeing so many different players in there has to make one think the will be better. Or at the very least have the same story just with different players.
