Bengals Sign WR From Gruden’s UFL Days

by Roster Moves

The Bengals signed journeyman Wide Receiver John Standeford. Standeford and Bengals OC Jay Gruden are quite familiar with eachother, Standeford playing the last 2 seasons for Gruden in the UFL. During that period Standeford was one of Gruden’s more talented players on Offense. (Not saying much for a minor league level talent pool I know)

It can easily be assumed that Standeford already knows the offense backwards and forwards which may be an asset during a shortened off-season. Standeford stands at 6’4″ and 206 lbs making him a rather large target for Dalton. It was widely obvious when looking at his UFL rosters Gruden highly values 2 types of receivers, either very tall and possession receivers or short and shifty guys. The Bengals already have a lot of the ‘shifty’ with Shipley, Cosby, Caldwell, Whalen and Hawkins they need to have a little more preseason depth at the bigger targets that Gruden values.

Standeford has bounced around enough rosters a lot of rosters during his career, and it’s pretty likely he still won’t find a home in Cincinnati. The WR position is an open race but only a few serious contenders. Standeford will most likely be cut before week 1 as long as everyone is healthy.
