Bengals Decline Option on OT Andre Smith

by Roster Moves

AP

The Bengals have decided to pass on the the full length contract for OT Andre Smith. By doing this, Andre Smith will be a Free Agent at the End of the 2012 NFL season. This move is an example of a smart business/football decision of the teams front office.

Declining the option gives the team more options on how to handle Smith. It’s becoming well known that he has shown up in shape at camp and is even starting to perform in preseason like a young 1st round OT. But if this new look Andre is just a sham for the contract (called contract years for a reason) or if he just regresses the Bengals can now easily walk away. But on the other hand, if Andre performs well, the Bengals can work out another contract with him.

Even though drafting Andre Smith may not have been the best draft pick, the handling of his contract has been fantastic. It’s been laced with weight clauses and this opt out
