According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Cincinnati Bengals have acquired SS Taylor Mays from the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick. Mays went through an up and down rookie year last year, and the 49ers were rumored to be marketing him for a trade. The Bengals were actually scouting Mays when he came out of USC after an All-American season, and considered using their 1st round pick on him. Here’s an ESPN Scouting report of Mays:
“Mays is a physically imposing safety with a rare combination of size and long speed. He is faster than he is quick and will struggle when locked up in man coverage as he is a bit tight in the hips and will lose a step in transition. He is a smart safety who is quick to read and react. He shows the ability to recognize blocking schemes and filter his way to the ball. He can be a powerful tackler but knows when to throttle it down and wrap up to make the secure tackle. He is more effective the closer he lines up to the line of scrimmage and is not apt to ever become a ball-hawking deep safety.”
Mays will most likely provide depth behind starters Reggie Nelson and Chris Crocker, where the Bengals have lacked depth.
Rumored Undisclosed pick is valued at being a 4th round 2012 Draft pick. It could conditionally be bumped up unto being a 3rd round pick if Mays were to play 80% of the defensive snaps this season. – C.B.
