Now or Never For Finley

by Bengals

With the last preseason game tonight before roster cut-downs on Saturday, the moment of truth is here for rookie RB Jay Finley. The Bengals took the Baylor product with a compensatory 7th-round draft pick, so nothing was going to be handed to him. Finley got a lot of carries during Bengals training camp when Benson was unsigned and Bernard Scott was injured. He managed to impress Marvin Lewis enough to garner his praise:

“He’s got great quickness and shows an ability to make people miss. Yesterday when we did the one-on-ones I thought he did a great job separating from the linebackers. You saw a lot of separation and once he got that crack you saw the speed for a long run.”

Finley is giving his all for a shot to play in the NFL. I watched him be the first player out practice 15-20 minutes before anyone else during training camp. He was arguably more consistent than Brian Leonard as being the third best RB during practices. After getting 7 carries for 15 yards against the Lions in his first NFL game, Finley has missed the last 2 games due to injury. Now is his last shot to show he’s worth at least a spot on the practice squad. The Bengals will most likely keep RB’s Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, and Brian Leonard. Finley has a chance to make the roster as the 4th RB, but he will have to prove it tonight as Benson is in jail and Bernard Scott is injured.
