Will Bengals Youth be Served?

Rookie QB Andy Dalton will look to lead the Bengals offense this season.

When the Bengals square off with their division rival Cleveland Browns, they will do so with one of the NFL’s youngest offenses which features three rookie starters including QB Andy Dalton, RG Clint Boling, and WR A.J. Green. They will also have four other starters with less than four years of NFL experience. The team isn’t using youth as an excuse but as a source of energy and excitement for the team. Team captain Andrew Whitworthhad this to say of his teams’ youth:

“It’s younger. It’s just a different mindset, different attitude. It brings some life to the locker room and some change. There aren’t as many guys that are just playing and thinking we don’t have a chance. We have some young guys that have won and are real good players and they bring some energy. Sometimes you need some new freshness.”

The Bengals offense will also be led by a rookie coach. Jay Gruden is in his first year as an NFL offensive coordinator, and will look to implement his version of the West Coast Offense into this young team. He too is not making any excuses and believes his team can overcome its youth and be successful. Gruden had this to say of his young offense:

“It’s not like we don’t have anything here. These guys are legitimate weapons, and these guys are legitimate players. Yes, it will be a challenge with whoever’s on offense, and I don’t think we can use any excuses.”
