The Vegas odds have the Bengals expected to win by 3 points at the Seattle Seahawks. The Bengals #2 defense against the Seahawks #31 offense seems to easy a matchup to win. Especially when the Seahawks may be starting their backup Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.
But a few historical trends suggest the Bengals may struggle to come out with a victory today.
The Bengals are 5-16-1 coming out of the bye week since 1990.
- Which is good for last in the NFL. Under Marvin Lewis, the Bengals aren’t much better, with only a 2-5-1 record. And those 2 wins were both at home. In away games following the bye, the Bengals have been 0-4.
The Bengals haven’t beaten the Seahawks at Seattle since November 6, 1994.
- Jeff Blake was at the helm the last time the Bengals won in one of the loudest Stadiums in the NFL.
The Bengals record in away games on the west coast is 1-7 under Marvin Lewis.
- Of the six ‘West Coast’ teams (Seahawks, Raiders, 49ers, Chargers, Cardinals, and Broncos), the Bengals haven’t won in these away games since 2003′s 34-27 victory against the San Diego Chargers.
All these records indicate that Marvin Lewis must prepare his team differently this year than he has in past years. Granted, the 2011 Bengals are an entirely new team. They have been shattering old records all year, snapping a 7-game losing streak against the Colts, a 10-game losing streak against the Bills, and a 7-game road losing streak against the Jaguars.
Let’s hope the 2011 Bengals can continue to prove they are a whole new team. 5-2 is a nice place to be.
