According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, Bengals WR Jerome Simpson has been indicted on drug charges today in Covington, Ky. The indictment comes after nearly 4 months ago, when federal authorities confiscated a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana that had been shipped from California to his northern Kentucky home. After investigators searched Simpson’s house, they discovered 6 more pounds of pot, as well as drug paraphernalia which included drug packaging materials, scales and smoking devices. If convicted, Simpson faces one to five years in prison.
Its been a sad fall from grace for the former Coastal Carolina standout. After being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Simpson exploded for 18 catches for 247 yards and 3 TD’s over the last 2 games of the 2010 season. He then became a full-time starter this year for the Bengals, grabbing 50 receptions for 725 yards and 4 TD’s. Jerome can expect at the very least to get handed a suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and his future as an NFL player is now very much in doubt. And because he is a free agent, this all but ensures he won’t be a Bengal next season.
