Franchise Tag Monday: Will Bengals Use it or lose It?

Jan 15, 2012; Baltimore, MD, USA; Houston Texans running back Arian Foster (23) walks along the sidelines after losing to the Baltimore Ravens 20-13 during the 2011 AFC divisional playoff game at M

The franchise tag period will begin today and run through March 5 as each team has the option to choose one player with an expiring contract who will receive a one-year deal in hope of working out a long-term contract, or risk losing that player to free agency. The Bengals are unlikely to tag any of their free agents, as the only player remotely warranting the use of the tag is free agent safety Reggie Nelson, which would only cost the Bengals  $6.2 million if they can’t reach a long-term deal. However, several players they may target, such as Bills WR Stevie Johnson or Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson. Here are the franchise tag costs by position:

QB: $14.4 million in 2012; down from $16.1 million in 2011

RB: $7.7 million in 2012; down from $9.6 million in 2011

WR: $9.4 million in 2012; down from 11.4 million in 2011

TE: $5.4 million in 2012; down from $7.3 million in 2011

OL: $9.4 million in 2012; down from $10.1 million in 2011

DE: $10.6 million in 2012; down from $13 million in 2011

DT: $7.9 million in 2012; down from $12.5 million in 2011

LB: $8.8 million in 2012; down from $10.1 million in 2011

CB: $10.6 million in 2012; down from $13.5 million in 2011

S: $6.2 million in 2012; down from $8.8 million in 2011

As of now, Texans RB Arian, Foster, Eagles WR Desean Jackson, Ravens RB Ray Rice, and Lions DE Cliff Avril are the only players certain to get the tag, as they are all far apart in contract talks with their respective teams. Are likely candidates include Patriots WR Wes Welker, Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch, and Titans CB Cortland Finnegan.
