So while it’s not terribly surprising that Simpson plead guilty to one count of prohibited acts relating to controlled substances, what was surprising is how much the facts of the case had changed since the outset. For example, the drug trafficking charge was notably altered to a lesser offense. Also, the package delivered to Simpson’s residence from Eureka, California was admitted for the record as containing only 2.0 lbs of marijuana while no more than an additional 0.9 lbs of marijuana found in the residence. This is much different from earlier reports of the quantity of the drug being as high as 8 or 9 lbs and the scene being something more like the finale of Scarface. Moreover, Kenton Commonwealth Prosecutor Rob Sanders was richly quoted in his press conference saying,

…the comments out of California compromised the investigation and could have jeopardized officer safety. I do not know where those people got their information, but it was obviously bad. That’s why law enforcement agencies should never comment on a case that is not their own…

Sanders went on to say,

This office (Kenton Country) did not prepare the warrant and was not notified of the investigation until after the warrant was already executed. I will not comment on the potential legal issue…

And further,

Jerome Simpson will receive the same punishment as anyone else who committed the same offense, has no record and cooperated with law enforcement. He gets no breaks because of his profession but shouldn’t be treated more harshly either.
