Earlier in the week on Saturday, the Bengals signed un-drafted free agent,
Vontaze Burfict, LB, ASU.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Burfict, like I was, you would be unaware that at one point, before the draft, he was projected to be a first, or second round pick. So what would make this kid who was, and possibly still is a potential superstar, an un-drafted free agent (UDFA).
For starters, during his senior year, he had a heavy increase in penalties, due to unnecessary roughness, and jumping the snap. Secondly, he had a, “disastrous” pro-day, as stated by Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, and his NFL Combine was nothing short of a disappointment.
Burfict weighs in a 6’1″ and 248lbs. During his NFL Combine, he ran an unofficial 5.09-40, with a 30.0in vertical. Along with the poor performance, he also tested positive for Marijuana.
Despite this, NFL.com’s official Combine Tracker / Scouting report gave him an 84.7 overall grading. To put things into perspective, Dre Kirkpatrick, our number one pick, received a rating of a 92, and Kevin Zeitler received an 85. He was our second first round grab.
The scouting report on Burfict says that he is good at covering the TE, an above average pass rusher, and a force in the run game.
