Mel Kiper: Kevin Zeitler is an Early-Impact Player

When the Bengals opted to pass on Stanford guard David DeCastro and trade down to select Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler, many fans began clamoring, “What were they thinking?” DeCastro was the highest rated guard on every “analysts” board, but the Bengals felt Zeitler was the best guard in the draft, so they went with him. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. is also a big fan of Zeitler and included him on his list of “Early-Impact Rookies”:

The Bengals didn’t quite crack four yards per run last year (3.9) and it was a combination of issues. They clearly lacked explosiveness at running back with Cedric Benson, but I thought the guard play was pretty weak too. They just didn’t get enough push, or get to the second level. Zeitler is a really good player, and I think the Bengals will see a difference in the run game as he develops.

Its also worth noting in his list of 6 offensive players, DeCastro was not amongst them.
