Running Back:

There were plenty of reasons why the Bengals chose to not resign Cedric Benson. His attitude on the sidelines while Bernard Scott was given increased carries was one. Benson also struggled getting the ball into the end zone on short carries next to the goal line. He had the same problem getting short yardage first downs as well. It certainly did not help his case when ball control became a severe issue for him. If you can’t hang on to the ball in the AFC North, you won’t last there long. Benson had 5 fumbles in the 2011 season and a total of 12 in the last two seasons combined. What made those fumbles worse for Benson was the fact that they were usually coming at crucial points in close games.

The addition of BenJarvus Green-Ellis was a major boost to the running game in Cincinnati. In his 510 career NFL carries, he has yet to put the ball on the ground. He also brings another new dimension to the backfield because of his great hands. He doesn’t have many receptions in his NFL career at this point, but coming from a pass heavy New England offense where the running back is generally the fourth or fifth read, it’s tough to record many receptions in that system. Having a back that can consistently catch out of the backfield is something that Cincinnati hasn’t seen since the short lived career of Chris Perry. He is not as explosive of a runner as some fans wanted to see in Cincinnati (i.e. Michael Bush), but ball control in this division far outweighs a homerun threat.
