ACL Tears Becoming the Norm in the NFL?‏

Is it me, or have torn ACLs been a bit of a problem this season? When Bengals RB Bernard Scott went down this past Sunday with a torn ACL, I got to thinking to myself, “There have been quite a bit of ACL tears this year.” It’s been a problem for many teams, and even for the Bengals, who have lost players to ACL tears besides Scott. Linebacker Thomas Howard tore his ACL earlier this season in practice. This injury hasn’t only affected the Bengals, though.

The Jets, Texans, Vikings, Ravens, Bills, Colts, Patriots, Saints, Giants, Eagles, and 49ers all have players that have suffered from torn ACLs over the past two years. It is an extremely scary injury that will certainly end a player’s season and can even end a player’s career. If and when a player does come back, in a lot of cases, he never gets back to the lever he once was. This injury is something not to mess with simply because of the fact that the ACL obviously is in the knee, and players use their knees for just about everything they do: running, making cut moves, hurdling over defenders, making big hits, blocking, the list goes on and on. This injury has been a problem for years (Carson Palmer tore his ACL back in the 2005 playoffs), but I have noticed it a lot more this year.

Here is a list of just a few players who have had their season ended because of torn ACLs this year:

Darrelle Revis (Jets CB)

Brian Cushing (Texans LB)

Bernard Scott (Bengals RB)

Thomas Howard (Bengals LB)

Jason Kelce (Eagles C)

Terrell Thomas (Giants DB)

Chris Chamberlain (Saints LB)

Jake Ballard (Patriots TE)

Brandon McKinney (Colts DT)

A.J. Edds (Colts LB)

Scott Lutrus (Colts LB)

That list includes two All-Pros, two Pro Bowlers, as well as several other quality players. While injuries are, have, and will be a part of football, it is concerning to see such a rise in one particular kind of injury.
