Morning NFL Headlines: The Rise of William Powell

Injuries have once again decimated the Arizona Cardinals backfield, and the team will now look to William Powell to give them a spark in the running game. Powell, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State, carried the ball a mere 23 times while at KSU as he was buried on the depth chart. The Cardinals signed him as an undrafted free agent last year, but he was waived in final cuts and wasn’t added to the practice squad until later in the year.

He lit it up in the preseason, lead the Cards in rushing with 249 yards and three touchdowns while he averaged 5.9 yards per carry. Hopefully this will be the next great story of “rags-to-riches” for Powell.

The NFL has fined Jets OG Matt Slauson $10,000 for his illegal peel back block on Texans LB Brian Cushing, which resulted in the All-Pro tearing his ACL.

The Redskins are anticipating Robert Griffin III to play this week, and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will not change his play-calling to protect RGIII, who is coming off a concussion.

The Patriots’ dynamic tight-end duo of Aaron Hernandez (ankle) and Rob Gronkowski (hip) were limited again in Thursday’s practicebut the chances are  good that they’ll both play this week vs. the Seahawks.

With the Ravens players watching film in preparation for the Cowboys and QB Tony Romo this week, they are game-planing to defend Romo in a similar manner they’ve done to defend Ben Roethlisberger.

Comedian Frank Caliendo has announced that he’ll begin appearing on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. He was formerly a a part of the FOX NFL pregame show.
