The Football Jones

The Bengals got arguably one of the 2012 NFL Draft’s biggest steals in California receiver Marvin Jones after he slipped to Cincinnati in the 5th-round. Some compared him to former Bengals great Chad Johnson, which was quite ironic considering the pick used to select Jones was the one acquired in the 2011 Chad Johnson trade to the New England Patriots, where he recorded 15 receptions for 276 yards.

Going into Sunday, Jones had three receptions for 26 yards in four games played, and was scheduled to make his first-career start vs. the Steelers on Sunday night football. Quite a debut, that is until he suffered an MCL sprain on the team’s first kickoff return and never saw an offensive snap, as he is now sidelined for potentially 3-4 weeks.

With the Bengals’ inability to find a consistent #2 receiver to help make opposing defense pay for double-teaming A.J. Green, the offense has suddenly lost it’s touch over the past three games, in which Cincinnati has scored 13, 24, and 17 points respectively after averaging 33 points in the previous three games.

Jones did say Tuesday he’s hopeful that after the teams’ bye-week, he’ll be able to play vs. the Denver Broncos in Week 9. In the meantime, look for Mohamed Sanu to get increased playing time after recording his first career catches during Sunday night’s loss.
