Sitting at 3-5 and seemingly out of the playoff race, the disappointment of this year has been an all-too familiar feeling when it comes to the Cincinnati Bengals, but one bright spot has remained throughout the year that has made even a disappointing season like this one that can be filled with optimism and hope for even brighter days ahead. The Bengals currently sport the NFL’s 11th-ranked passing offense, and of the teams’ 2,077 yards through the air, 735 of them have gone to none other than A.J. Green, meaning he’s accounted for over one third of the Bengals offense through the air.
Offensive MVP — WR A.J. Green: On a schizophrenic offense, he’s the lone constant. Green elevated to elite wide receiver status this season. He’s on pace for 102 receptions for 1,470 yards and 16 touchdowns even as defenses suffocate him with coverage.
Also, according to Pro Football Focus, Green ranks as the 4th-best receiver at +15.8 out of 110 eligible receivers. One other stat to make note of was Green’s +1.7 run block rating, the 6th-best of 110 receivers. Sadly though, Armon Binns, who was expected to be the Bengals #2 receiver opposite of Green, was rated dead-last in run-blocking and second-to-last overall as a receiver. IT just shows how great A.J. has been this year, while his fellow recivers have been a huge letdown that has prevented Green from having even better numbers as defenses are able to focus their coverages to Green more. Once the Bengals get a true #2 receiving threat, we should fully expect Green to put up monster numbers on a weekly basis.
