You can imagine the butt-chewing Mike Zimmer gave his defense during halftime, and boy did they respond. The Chargers first two drives of the second-half went for a whopping 11 yards combined on six plays. San Diego had less than nine yards of offense in five of the their seven second-half possessions. This, while the offense was busy figuring out who could have more dumb penalties or costly turnovers until late in the 4th-quarter when they took a 17-13 lead the defense would not relinquish.
It’s also easy to forget the Bengals defense was ranked around 30th in the NFL earlier in year, forcing the offense into shootouts seemingly every week. Now Zimmer has turned them into the NFL’s 8th-best defense, and it only looks to be getting better. Enjoy him why you got him Bengals fans, because it will be hard to keep Zimmer out of an NFL head-coaching job for long.
