Advanced analytics also show that the Texans have been lucky to win 12 games this season. Football Outsiders’ invaluable DVOA rankings show Houston as just the tenth-best team in the league, and only 13th in Weighted DVOA (adjusted to add weight to more recent games). According to the latter metric, the Bengals actually rank 7th in the NFL, which is not surprising considering Cincinnati has won six of its last seven, most of those in impressive fashion.

The Bengals will still be underdogs against the Texans, no doubt about it. But a playoff visit to the Lone Star State, rather than up to the land of chowdah, sure would do wonders for Cincinnati’s chances of winning its first playoff game since 1991.

I’ve got a bad feeling that Houston is going to ruin your scenario by winning in Indy. I’m not a Bengals fan, but a Pats fan. Your scenario would be a dream come true for us as well. First of all, a bye would do us good, with so many key offensive players on the mend (and a few on the defensive side too). Everyone likes home field, but Foxboro is a cold, unwelcoming place in December and January for teams that don’t include Tom Brady. Lastly, I really don’t want to see the Bengals in the post-season, even if we are likely to beat you, I’m worried about what might happen to our offense in the process (I hear tell you guys hit kinda HARD…)

I stand corrected! Good luck in Houston!
