NFL News: Sean Payton's Monster Extension, & Head Coaches on Hot Seat

The New Orleans Saints  agreed in principle on a new contract extension with head coach Sean Payton that is reportedly for five years and will pay him an annual salary in the neighborhood of Bill Belichick’s $7.5 million with the New England Patriots.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports that Ken Whisenhunt  of the Arizona Cardinals, Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears, and Jim Schwartz of the Detroit Lions are all expected to retain their jobs going into 2013.

It’s looking more and more likely that Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb (ankle) will not play in Week 17 against the Minnesota Vikings, but is expected to be ready for the postseason.

The Dallas Cowboys will need all the help they can get on defense to contain the Washington Redskins offense on Sunday night, and All-Pro linebacker DeMarcus Ware is expected to play despite suffering from a shoulder injury that will require him to wear a shoulder harness to protect it form being further damaged.

The Oakland Raiders won’t have QB Carson Palmer (ribs/lung) for their home finale vs. thew San Diego Chargers, and getting the start in his place won’t be Matt Leinert as originally expected, but it will instead be Terrelll Pryor getting his first career NFL start.
