Speaking of Ken Whisenhunt, the former Arizona HC interviewed with San Diego on Saturday. He was reportedly the favorite to land the Cleveland Browns head-coaching gig that ultimately went to Carolina Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski, but according to CBS’ Jason La Canfora, a disagreement on front-office control nixed the deal:
According to sources, Banner and Whisenhunt could not reach an agreement on how much say the front office would have in rounding out the coaching staff. Whisenhunt wasn’t seeking any personnel control or anything out of the ordinary for a head coach, but Cleveland’s front office wanted input on certain staff issues and ultimately were most comfortable with a rookie head coach.
The Chicago Bears‘ search for a new coach turned to Green Bay Packers OC Tom Clements last week after the team interviewed him on Thursday with general manager Phil Emery present, and now that Clements’ Packers are eliminated from the postseason, he can now interview for other openings. He was regarded as another big-name assistant coach who could score a head-coaching job this offseason.
