Looking back at the 2012 season, we can see that the Ravens suffered losses to the Eagles, the Texans, the Steelers at home, then the Redskins, Broncos and Bengals. Of those, only the loss in Philadelphia was to a non-playoff team and that was week two. On the other hand, they ended their season losing four of their last five before beating the Colts, the Broncos and finally the Patriots to advance to their second Superbowl where they are 1-0.
In the regular season, the 49ers lost to the Vikings, the Giants, the Rams and the Seahawks and tied the Rams at home. Of those, two and the tie were against non-playoff teams. They skipped the Wildcard round and beat the Packers and the Falcons to reach their sixth Superbowl where they are 5-0.
Against common opponents, the Giants and the Patriots, the Ravens were 3-0 and the 49ers were 1-1.
There’s really two stories we’ll hear over and over in the upcoming week. The first is Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco’s second year star quarterback. The other is Ray Lewis, Baltimore’s retiring defensive legend. When the game is over, without a doubt, we’ll get plenty of one or the other while we continue to hope that next season they’ll be talking stripes.
