Alex Smith has definitely had more downs than ups as an NFL quarterback, and frankly if the 49ers wanted to bench him and “find out” what they had with Kaepernick, I would be perfectly fine with that. This, however, was not the case. The 49ers, by their actions, were just waiting for the right time to make the switch to Colin Kaepernick. When could this possibly be? How about right after Alex Smith has a concussion! This is genius! What an opportunity! What could be the downside?

The downside is injuries. Alex Smith did not leave the game because of poor performance; he left the game because of a concussion. Concussions are at the forefront of what the NFL is trying to eliminate due to forthcoming billion dollar lawsuits. Colin Kaepernick came in, outperformed Alex Smith and won the quarterback position. This does not bode well for the NFL. Now there are players everywhere who saw this happen and know they are not going to say anything about their injuries.

What is the motivation? Why would anyone disclose anything? Alex Smith did the right thing in reporting his concussion and getting things checked out. The NFL loves him for this. Jim Harbaugh made the decision to replace him with Kaepernick…permanently. Anyone now playing in the NFL, especially for Harbaugh knows not to say anything EVER about injury, due to fear of being replaced… permanently.

Really? Pro athletes have been grabbing their starting positions for damn near a hundred years, from Lou Gherig to Chris Sabo to Colin Kaepernick. Not news worthy. We’ll never know if Alex Smith would have them to this point but you can’t blame ANY coach for going with the hot hand.
