The Cincinnati Bengals announced today that they have hired defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s son, Adam Zimmer, as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach. Zimmer is just 29 years old, but already has a wealth of NFL experience, having been an assistant coach for the past eight years. He was the assistant linebackers coach for the Saints from 2006-09, and was part of their Super Bowl run in 2010. If you recall, this was in the same season in which his mother, Vikki Zimmer, passed away, and Mike was invited to be on the sidelines for the Saints’ Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Adam has spent the past three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2010-12, who went 11-23 the past two seasons after winning the AFC West his first year there.
Head coach Marvin Lewis had this to say on Adam:
Adam is a good young coach with two great experiences already in the NFL. He’ll assist our defensive backs coach, Mark Carrier, and I’m very confident he will do a fine job.
It is worth noting that Adam was arrested on suspicion of DUI in December, and was aslo involved in a one-car crash.
