Andre Smith was the best right tackle in football according to Pro Football Focus and that is why is also crucial to keep him. Duane Brown was named to the All-Pro team this season and he just signed a 6 year 53.4 million dollar deal. Smith isn’t going to ask for quite as much but it’s still going to be around 7.5 million dollars to sign him long term.

Pair him with Michael Johnson, who is a free agent, and Carlos Dunlap, who will be one next season, the Bengals have a lot of players to extend. With around 10 or 11 million dollars combined among them plus the 29 million for Atkins and AJ, that’s close to 40 million dollars right there. That shortens our cap space a hefty amount but this is needed to keep a young core. I hope this explains why we can’t sign Mike Wallace or any other free agent for a ridiculous amount of money and hopefully this stops the ridiculous discussions on twitter.

For the last time no, we aren’t signing Wes Welker.

One of the main reasons I try to avoid your site is because of your lack of knowledge yet you try to state it as fact and you’re usually wrong, for example due to the knew CBA teams can’t restructure rookie contracts until after their 3rd season, AJs contract isn’t a factor until after next season so your entire article is now flawed and your typical reader takes it as fact. If I didn’t have the Bengals app I wouldn’t consider reading your articles…

that does not change the fact that green will demand the brinks truck be opened to the fullest and part of building a great team is planning for the future. it might not be a factor now but the point is that it will be a factor that has to be dealt with.

The post is saying half the cap from THIS YEAR is locked up in AJ and Geno, I agree they need to plan for next year and the year after, this post is talking about the cap this year, not next season. They post incorrect information on this site all the time.

“With his contract expiring soon, Atkins right now is the number 1
priority in re-signing and I honestly wouldn’t feel comfortable having
him go into next season without an extension. Hopefully when the Bengals
sign Atkins to an extension, that’s at least 12 million on the books
right there. That combined with AJ’s is close to 29 million dollars and
pretty much cuts our cap space in half.”

And unless you’re a member of the team in someway please refrain from using “our”……

The main point in this article is we have to keep those extensions in mind. Signing Mike Wallace to a big contract this season is not a good idea if we want to keep our core players. Yes we would be able to spend that amount of money this this year but when AJ wants his extension no way we are able to afford him Atkins, Wallace/welker/big name free agent, Andre Smith, M. Johnson, and Dunlap and plus no big free agents would want one year deals so don’t use that argument. And I will use we and our when refering to the Bengals as do most fans because the Bengals are a very good portion of my life and they are nothing without the fans as we are all part of the team. I go to games and buy jerseys and support the team. I and thousands of other Bengals fans are qualified to say that.

im not going to argue about it, i agree that the way the info was presented is kind of misleading but i didnt take it that way, more of a ready the team for future spending kind of comment in my opinion.
