With the Pittsburgh Steelers set to lose leading-receiver mike Wallace to free agency, they may already have his replacement lined up in the form of recently released Steve Breaston, who was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs last week:
Breaston, released by the Chiefs, has drawn interest from several teams, including the Browns, but a return to his hometown of Pittsburgh is likely at this point, sources said. Breaston excelled for Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley when they were with the Cardinals.
Though there are some concerns about Breaston’s health, he is seen as a good fit with the Steelers.
The salary cap-strapped Steelers can’t afford to go after any bigger-named free agents, and Breaston’s 7 catches for 74 yards in 2012 won’t make up for the production they’ll lose from Wallace. Breaston did catch 61 passes for 785 yards and two touchdowns in 2011.
Ironically, they may have to fend off their AFC North rivals in the Cleveland Browns for his services.
